It's about time.

Apple's work on the iPhone 18 Pro may finally start paying off, with a smaller Dynamic Island - a first in the past 4 years. Since the launch of the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, Apple has kept a consistently sized Dynamic Island, which has always been a bit cumbersome and large.

However, leaked images of the iPhone 18 Pro show a redesigned front screen and much smaller Dynamic Island. Majin Bu, who maintains a somewhat good track record, leaked images of the device, says that they were posted by mistake. While it is most likely a mockup, it is still interesting to see where Apple wants to go in the future of iPhone.

The iPhone 17 Pro's Dynamic Island was around 20.06mm wide, and the leaked iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island is set to be around 13.5mm wide, a 35 percent decrease. This is great news for the phone, but it is still unclear if this drastic of a change will make its way into iPhone 18 Pro. Other leakers suggest, based on dummy models, that the size change will be more modest, going down to around 14.98mm, or around a 25 percent reduction. Either way, any size smaller than the current Dynamic Island will hopefully be a breath of fresh air for the front of iPhone 18 Pro.

The hope and dream for Apple is not to get rid of Face ID, but rather to implement it under the display. Apple is expected to pioneer its under-display Face ID components on the iPhone 18 Pro, which is what allows the Dynamic Island to shrink so much this year. Under-display selfie cameras have also existed for years at this point - instead, the challenge is getting cameras that look good enough to ship.

It seems as though Apple's stringency and focus on quality control is what is causing these hiccups towards a fully seamless display. The fact that they are waiting until it is fully ready proves that they know that their users prefer quality over quantity, and would prefer a better overall user experience.

Apple's smaller Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro looks to be a great addition that will make the iPhone 18 lineup feel great. We will have to wait and see what Apple does soon.
