XBOX set to be the only game streaming service for GTA VI
They needed this one.
In an all-hands-on meeting this morning over at XBOX, CEO Asha Sharma said that XBOX is gearing up to do something related to GTA VI that "no other platform holder is doing." This certainly raises eyebrows, given that there has been no official word from any company surrounding a possible XBOX/GTA VI partnership. The game, however, is set to launch at the beginning for just PS5 and XBOX Series X / S, without a PC variant for now.
What Sharma is alluding to, according to The Verge and sources close to Microsoft is that XBOX may have struck a deal to exclusive streaming rights for GTA VI. This would be a landmark partnership, especially given Sony's chokehold on the console market and the decline of XBOX in recent years.

Ever since the launch of the XBOX Series X / S way back in 2020, the PS5 has continued to dominate the console market. According to Shane the Gamer, Sony has sold a whopping 95.3 million units as of June 30th, 2026, with XBOX Series X / S at only 34-35 million units through early 2026. Sony clearly has the upper hand in the console market at this point, and XBOX has gone through rebrands and structural shifts throughout the past few years not solely, but in large part, because of the loss of market share in the console space.
So, because XBOX is able to land a deal like this with Rockstar Games for such a hyped game like GTA VI, it proves that XBOX may be having a comeback in the console space.
This news also comes shortly after XBOX announced that they are expanding XBOX Cloud Gaming to all XBOX Game Pass tiers, but limiting usage to 15 hours/month for Ultimate, 10 hours/month for Premium, and 5 hours/month for Essential. This expansion, along with a new pay-as-you-go tier for just XBOX Cloud Gaming marks a shift in the way that XBOX is marketed and branded.
This is especially true because of CEO Asha Sharma stating that Project Helix, the next generation of XBOX, is set to be a family of devices, which would imply that Cloud Gaming may be at the core of XBOX's DNA especially when working with partners to create XBOX. Harnessing the power of XBOX Cloud Gaming for something like a handheld may be more appealing so you get good performance to run games on a smaller device.
The most important thing when running these servers is to have the infrastructure to back it up. So, if XBOX and Microsoft are being forced to implement usage limits, it means that the infrastructure is being used enough to warrant limits. This again could indicate a new focus on XBOX in the coming years.
XBOX's possible deal with Rockstar Games to become the only cloud game streaming platform for GTA VI is exciting, as it marks a change in pace for XBOX in the future. We will have to wait and see what XBOX does soon.
