This feels like a bad decision.

Recently, GM has announced that they will be dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from all of their cars. This came after the announcement in March 2023 that they would be dropping Apple CarPlay from their EVs. This came as a disappointment for some people, since it is such a useful feature. GM says that they are doing it to develop their own infotainment system.

This, in it of itself, is fine, but it seems like an odd move to me. If they want to get this right and connect as deep into the phone as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do currently, this would be a massive undertaking and it would be something that Apple would not enjoy in the slightest, since they don't allow anyone to get access to the data that they have.

The Apple Watch is a prime example of this. No one can build a better smart watch for the iPhone because it will never have access to the amount of data that they have. It won't have access to the data about health, but also just about how the user uses their device and their preferences. It would be the same with CarPlay. No one is going to have access to the iPhone's data in a way that a CarPlay interface does.

If GM can manage to pull this off, I'm all for it. I just need to see it in action before I can decide what I think about it.

This move from GM feels odd, but who knows if it turns out well or not. We will have to see what GM does soon.
