The day is finally here.

Yesterday, Valve announced that they are officially discontinuing the Steam Deck LCD and fully replacing it with the current OLED model. Once the device is out of stock, "it will no longer be available," says Valve. This leaves just the 512GB and 1TB OLED models in production.

This is a sad, but expected day. The original Steam Deck was revolutionary and changec the gaming industry forever, but there were still some flaws with it, mainly the LCD display. It was not bad, per se, but it was only 60Hz, 1280x800 resolution, and did not have the perfect black levels of an OLED panel.

So, when Valve announced the OLED model shortly after, it was clear that the focus had shifted more towards the OLED model, as just the 256GB model remained at the same price as the old 64GB model, $399.

It was still being sold, but it was clear that it would not survive for much longer. Now, with the rumors of a Steam Deck 2 on the horizon, it would make sense that Valve would discontinue the original model and just sell the OLED model for now. Either way, it is still sad to see this revolutionary handheld get discontinued, even if it means that a new one is coming.

The Steam Deck LCD was a great handheld PC that changed the gaming landscape and brought a lot of power into a small package. We will have to wait and see what Valve does soon.
