When will it just be a camera?

For the past few months, information has been coming out that Apple is set to include a variable aperture camera system on iPhone 18 Pro. This is a massive breakthrouhg, and it brings the iPhone's camera much closer to a "real" camera than just a phone camera. This may help distinguish iPhone from other phone cameras to make it the clear choice for photography.

A variable aperture helps in many ways for iPhone and it's ability to capture information about a scene. For many years now, iPhone has used an ƒ/1.78 aperture lens, which, as MacRumors explains, means "the lens remains fully open at all times when capturing images." This is fine for most instances, but allowing flexibility in the amount of light let in can allow for adjustments to the amount of computational photography needed to make a photo look better.

Even just a small range goes a long way, since this will also help to create better depth-of-field in images, making photos look more professional. This distinction between a good photo and a "professional" photo is one that has plagued iPhone for years now.

iPhone has always had good cameras, and has slowly gotten to the point that they can be used in professional environments, depending on your needs. However, because of the lack of mechanical lenses and the bigger reliance on computational photography, you can still tell that a photo was taken on iPhone. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially because of the quality of iPhone cameras in general, but also because of the advancements in computational photography.

But adding in features that start to move away (slightly) from computational photography may add a more premium feel to images, balancing out the scale of each side of the coin. iPhone may start to become the default choice for more professional environments, and may become even more used in photography in general.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and its variable aperture look to be a great addition to the iPhone lineup, and could bring a more premium feel to iPhone photos and videos. We will have to wait and see what Apple does soon.
