Everything is turning OLED.

The iPad mini is loved by many, and it is finally getting one of the most major upgrades it has had in years: an OLED display. 9to5Mac recently leaked that Apple is expected to release a new OLED iPad mini model "later this year," and it could address many of the issues people have been facing on iPad mini for years now.

The OLED display that the iPad mini is expected to get will obviously be a great looking panel, with outstanding color accuracy and contrast. However, this will not be the same display as found in the M4 and M5 iPad Pros with a Tandem OLED panel. Instead, the new iPad mini will contain a single-stack OLED display, like what is found now in iPhones and other OLED displays.

While the jelly scrolling issue was somewhat addressed with the iPad mini 7 (A17 Pro), the issue still lingers with some users still reporting jelly scrolling issues. Jelly scrolling on a display is when one side of the display updates as you are scrolling before the other. This can cause movement issues and stuttery, wavy look as you use the display.

This was a major complaint with the iPad mini 6, and it was one of the most requested changes for the iPad mini 7. Less complaints have arisen for the iPad mini 7 about jelly scrolling, but it is still not a solved issue. The iPad mini 8's OLED panel is expected to fix this, finally.

Although it is a disappointment, it is unlikley that a ProMotion 120Hz panel will make its way into the iPad mini 8. This is because Apple may keep it for the higher end products like the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. However, the iPhone 17 base model does have a 120Hz refresh rate, so Apple may still include this in the iPad mini.

The iPad mini 8 looks to be a great upgrade, with a brand new OLED display that will bring fixes to jelly scrolling issues and improve the contrast of the display. We will have to wait and see what Apple does soon.
