We knew it was coming.

Today, Apple has announced that effective September 1st, 2026, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple for nearly 15 years, starting shortly before Steve Jobs' passing, will step down. Cook will transition his role to be Executive Chairman. Cook will still have a leading role at Apple, serving more closely with the board, maintaining policies and connections. John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will step into the role of CEO.

Along with this, Johny Srouji, Apple's current senior vice president of Hardware Technologies, will take a new role as Chief Hardware Officer. This combines his current role with similar responsibilities to Ternus' current role, with some of this being delegated to Tom Marieb. Marieb will assume responsibilities for day-to-day hardware engineering, reporting to Srouji.

This all has been rumored for months now, with the timing staying uncertain. Previously, there were statements that Tim Cook was looking to launch one more breakthrough thing before stepping down. Now, with the release of Apple Vision Pro and Apple Intelligence, their combined breakthroughs, while not always well taken, were still revolutionary. It appears that Cook is ready to move on, and Apple is ready for its next chapter.

Cook's time at Apple is time well-spent, as his innovations have sky-rocketed Apple, and created the tech giant we see today. Tim Cook brought Apple from $350 billion to well over $4 trillion in his time as CEO. Apple's spot as one of the most valuable companies in the world is in no small part attributed to Cook's tenure.

Tim Cook's business-oriented approach was still in stark contrast to what Steve Jobs imagined Apple as. While Jobs focused more heavily on the products and their design, Cook's expertise in business transformed Apple's image. Both CEOs had enormous impacts on Apple and brought their own vision for Apple's future.

Tim Cook has made a lasting impact on Apple, and has made it the company we see today. While Apple will never quite be the same, it appears that the time is now to move on, and have another leader take Cook's seat.

Ternus is well-qualified for this position, seeing that he has been at Apple for over 25 years, and developing groundbreaking devices like the all-new MacBook Neo. Ternus has transformed the Mac line, and played a key role in revitalizing it from Intel chips to Apple silicon. His designs and product developments have changed the industry, and show his experience and expertise to run a company like Apple.

Both Cook and Ternus will work together closely, during the summer for a smooth transition, and also moving forward generally, through Cook's new executive chairman position. The two will be able to share visions and lead the company, with Ternus at the forefront.

Tim Cook has been an extremely influential CEO of Apple, and has made it the company we see today. John Ternus, Tim Cook's successor, will carry on this legacy and shape Apple's future. We will have to wait and see what Apple does soon.
